This was created for a book of remembrance for the RAF & Defence Fire Service Association

‘A Fire-fighter.’ Also a prayer from Satish Kumar, who was a Jain monk.

George Edwards (Mem No: 238)

It is with the greatest sadness that I have to announce the death of George Edwards B.E.M.

George was making slow progress after his operation for stomach cancer but suffered a setback and passed away on Sunday evening 10th May.

George touched many lives on his journey, not only in the RAF Fire Service and the RAF & DFS Association but in his work with the Probation Service, the Air cadets and lately with SSAFA. George was always thinking of other people and worked tirelessly to help others despite battles with his own health. He would be the first to admit that he was only able to do this with his wife Anne’s support and our hearts go out to her, Peter and Christine and the grandchildren.

Rest well my old buddy I shall miss you immensely.

Steve

From Dennis McCann
Association President:

Whilst in Germany I had a telephone call from our Chairman Neil informing me of the sad loss of George. George was a real peoples person, he touched so many lives in so many different ways. Since I first met George over 40 years ago we often ended up on Committees together. Once on a club Committee in Laarbruch he organised Mike and Bernie Winters to perform in the club and because of his great love of football to take part in a football match. After the match he also arranged for a major foam unit to be on hand and cover Mike and Bernie in foam: everyone had a great laugh except for Mike and Bernie. Everyone who knew George will remember his jokes and witty stories.

George lived his life to the full: his wife and family were his rock enabling him to achieve so much. Anne we are so sorry for your loss: George will be greatly missed by us all.

God Bless You George my very good friend.

Dennis

From Neil Slade
Association Chairman:

It was with great sadness I received the news of George’s passing on Monday.

When I joined the Association, George was one of the first members to welcome me along with a pint, a true fireman!

The first Flashpoint I received was edited by George and his loyal mate Steve. You can see that my joining the Association and making the acquaintance of George go hand in hand. It didn’t take long for me to appreciate not only how much George contributed but how close the Association was to George’s heart. He played many roles during his time with us, besides joint Editor of Flashpoint he was the Area Co-ordinator for the North West and Wales and joint Press Officer with Steve.

A man well respected by all who knew him, he will be sadly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Anne and the family. I hope the many happy memories they share of George help to bring comfort at this sad time.

Neil Slade

Chairman

From Howard Harper

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Edwards, on behalf of the association members of Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, may I offer Ann and her family our deepest sympathy at this sad time.

Howard Harper (member 682)

Area co-ordinator Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.

The funeral arrangements for our good friend George Edwards BEM are:

A service will be held on Friday 22nd May 2015 at Our Lady Help of Christians RC Church. Portico Lane. Prescot. Merseyside L34 2QT at 09.30. Followed by a service at St Helens Crematorium Rainford Road, Saint Helens, Merseyside WA10 6DF at 11.00.

Anne and family would like you to join them for refreshments afterwards at the Ruskin’s Health & Fitness Centre Ruskin Drive, Denton's Green, Saint Helens WA10 6RP.

Regards Steve Harrison

George’s funeral service which took place on 22nd May 2015 at Our Lady Help of Christians RC Church, Portico Lane, Prescot, Merseyside was well attended not only by his family and close friends but friends from all the agencies he had worked with during his life. They were from the Probation Service, Air Cadets, SAFFA, RAFA and his Fire Fighting brothers from the RAF & DFS Association. There was standing room only, which reflected what effect George kindness and diligence had made to people’s lives. A guard of honour was formed by Air Cadets and Members of The RAF & DFS Association. The Standards from The RAFA & RAF & DFS Association were paraded by Phil Southern and Neil Slade.

Peter, George’s son, read his eulogy encompassing all his life and achievements in a controlled emotional yet humorous fashion which would have made George very proud as it did Anne his wife and daughter Christine on the day.

Anne would like to thank all who sent cards, flowers and posted kind comments on social media. She understands although you could not make it to the funeral you were there in spirit.

Some sad news for you.  Malcolm's wife, Agnes phoned this morning to say that Malcolm had passed away last night after a long fight with cancer; he would have been 69 next week. Malcolm was such a character; they broke the mould after Malcolm, he was such a nice guy and a good pal.  Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.

Tom

From Dave Kirk:

I would personally like to add my condolences and echo all of Tam's words.  Malcolm was indeed one of life's characters and the RAF Fire Service was an altogether better place for his presence in it.  I'll never forget his warm polite and generous personality, nor his wonderful dry sense of humour and great sense of fun.  I feel sure that in generations to come RAF Firemen will still be recounting the exploits of "Malcolm Bulloch from Kirkintilloch reading gas meters and pornography - your starter for ten"

Malc was a legend in his own lifetime and someone I feel privileged to have been able to call a friend and colleague.

RIP Malcolm.

From Brian Ford:

I would just like to add my sentiments to those that you have already received over “Malky” Bulloch.

“What a star!” just the mention of his name would lead to a grin on the faces of those who knew him and a day in his company was always hilarious, Mention his name and wonderful anecdotes will pour out from his friends. Some of his pranks were outrageous but never malicious. Malcolm was a true gentleman and his passing has left us all that poorer.

Rest in peace Malky

From:

Ken Bowden (Mem No: 412)

Unfortunately,

It is with great regret and much sadness that I have to inform you that your friend Ken passed away this afternoon.
He was a truly loving Husband to Sheila and a great Father to Sue, Steve, Ian and Debra who along with their partners, grandchildren and great grandchild will miss him dearly.
He was a great friend to many who will also miss him .
You may wish to remember him as the life and soul (after a few drams of whiskey) of the party; as long as you weren't talking politics!!

Funeral arrangements:

Ken's farewell will be on the 28th of May at 14:30.
This will be at Peterborough Crem

Peterborough Crematorium
Mowbray Road
North Bretton
Peterborough
PE6 7JE

The service will be followed by a gathering at the Fitzwilliam Arms in Marholm which is just down the road from the Crem.

Message from Steve:

I would just like to thank the Chairman, our Standard Bearer, the Standard Escorts and Association Members for their attendance at Dads Farewell on the 28th May at Peterborough.
It was great celebration of Dad's life and the part our Association played was most certainly most fitting and he would have been proud of everyone.
Mother and the rest of the family were especially pleased as they were not quite sure what to expect.
Dad really enjoyed his Association weekends away, meeting his many friends both old and new.
Many thanks once again to all, very much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Steve.

Dave "Stevie" Stevenson (Mem No: 768)

Just got a message from Diane Stevenson, Dave passed away yesterday, an old pal who will be sadly  missed

RIP my old mate..

From Steve Harrison:

Dave passed away suddenly on Wednesday 7th May 2014 aged 67. Dave served as an RAF Fire-Fighter at RAF Scampton, Akrotiri, St Mawgan and Laarbruch before he decided to leave the RAF. He then embarked on a career in the fire/oil/safety industry travelling to the Far East, Near East and Africa, which he wrote about in his excellent book “A Journey Through My Life”

Dave recently had some health problems with pancreatitis and had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Still, he carried on with great resilience and a sense of humour. Dave was a great character and will be missed by his friends and colleagues.

Funeral Arrangements:

Arrangements for Dave Stevenson’s Funeral have finally been confirmed

The funeral will take place at St Columb Major church St Columb Major Cornwall TR9 6SA on Tuesday 3 June  at 2.30 .

Any member/ friends / colleagues  willing and able to attend Dave’s Funeral will be most welcome  reception to follow in the pub next door to the church  The Pub was Dave’s local and also well frequented by the Late Jim Crabtree  there is still  apparently a photo of Jim behind the bar

From Dave Kirk:

Although I never knew Stevie personally I feel I have to add a couple of lines to this obituary.  Despite the onset of terminal illness, in recent months Dave devoted much of his time to the compilation of the latest edition of Flashpoint and though he had to give up prior to publication it is plain to see what a great contribution he made and what a loss to the Association his passing has become.  His account of the trip to Romania epitomises what a full and productive life he has led, and I would like to offer my condolences to Dianne and family.

RIP Dave

From George Edwards:

I am another who never served with Dave but have fond memories of him   from our meetings at reunions and cenotaph –Parades. He was without doubt a real character colourful and full of fun. His article in a previous flashpoint about the time he paid a surprise visit to he Chelsea pensioners home after a cenotaph parade must be one of the best ever flashpoint articles and I would say it reflects Dave’s fun loving out for a laugh attitude and I bet those Chelsea –pensioners who enjoyed a pint with him that day    remember it well

Dave has also provided invaluable help in the production of the new book that is in the process of publication   chronicling the history of the RAF fire service. He typed up literally hundreds of pages of manuscripts sent to the book production team it really was a thankless task but one he did willingly and highly competently his willingness to take on the role of flashpoint editor and area coordinator for Cornwall Devon & Somerset reflects his outstanding enthusiasm and love of his old trade. I have since hearing the sad news and wearing my SSAFA Case workers hat I have been in regular contact with Dave’s Wife Dianne offering some support and advice. Sadly no date has yet been set for the funeral but as soon as those details are released I will put them on the website. Dave did struggle during the later stages of his life/ illness but I shall always remember him as a cheerful and enthusiastic ex RAF Fireman. may you rest in peace my friend

George Edwards

Paul McGhee

Sadly Paul  McGhee passed away yesterday morning 27 November after a long battle with cancer. Paul was a very good friend of Steve Harrison, Kevin "Smiler"  Meeson,  Jim Smith  and I; going way back to our 1960’s Masirah days. All four of us managed a few visits to see Paul during the later days of his life, it was sad to see him suffer, but a great privilege to be in his company and  share with him fond recollections of those carefree  and pain free  days of our youth. We felt we brought some joy into his life during those visits a view shared by his family.

I know that Angela and her family would at this difficult time  really appreciate  condolence  cards and a good turn out for the funeral  . We have no funeral details yet but Steve Jim Kevin and I will definitely  be attending our dear friends funeral I’m about to notify John Goupillot  who was a another good friend of Paul’s .
