I think preparations
to take over the fire cover started in 1976 with the crew arriving in
early 1977 with the USAFE liaisons leaving around the end of Q1 1977.
Sculthorpe was a remote station for RAF Lakenheath with the longest
runway in Europe (at the time). At that time the 48th Tactical Fighter
Wing was stationed there; we were Det 1: 48th TFW. Station complement
was headed by Stn Off Steve Palmer. Primary role was providing domestic
fire cover for the airfield Reporting to him were the following:
Sub/O Les Lawrenson (ex
Stafford), L/Fm J Sadler, W Bisset (ex Boulmer) and R Middleditch
(promoted on station) Fmn D Facey,Fmn G Black, F White, C Hall, P Townshend, R
Warner, 'Homer', 'Doughy' Baker, 'Taff' Bruton, C Nash (transfer in)
plus lots more I can't, unfortunately, remember. Crew would be OIC,
Control Room attendant, Drivers for Unit 11, 12 and 5 + 1 crew for each
pumper. The Boss would have either the P-3 Rescue Truck or the station
Pick up. Photos attached of Units 11 and 12. Unit 11 is a P-12 pumper
based on a Ford chassis, side mount pump and tailboard for riding on.
Unit 12 was a 530B pumper with cross country capability. Unit 5 was a
GMC WD1500 (water Dispenser 1500 gallons); it was top heavy and had a
5mph speed limit on it! This was also used to resupply the crash trucks
using the tail mounted pump. As I left Sculthorpe in April 1978 we were
just learning to drive and operate the crash trucks: 2 x O-11A and 1 x
P-4 primary crash trucks; 2 x P-9 dual agent ramp trucks.

My dad Bob Armstrong is seated front centre.
Don’t know any other names ?
My dad had one incident of note at Topcliffe when a Meteor undercarriage
failed to open and after circling to ditch fuel it did a belly landing
and dad hauled the injured pilot out .
