Maastricht:
The photograph above was kindly sent in by Julian Davis with the following
message:
I thought your members might be
interested in the photograph attached. It was taken on the 22nd Feb 2014 at the
JOC Maastricht underground command bunker that was closed in 1991.
The photo shows the names of three
RAF fireman and their Belgian colleagues, who were the last fireman to serve in
the Bunker, I also believe they were the last military staffs there.

FT 2 Course 1991

Basic training at CTE Manston, September 1968. No uniforms provided
until completion of training, everyone was issued with hospital blues
and wellies. A tunic and black plastic wet legs for domestic training.
Wool fibre crash firefighting suits and white crash boots. In those days
we lived in the old WW2 wooden billets for the duration of the six week
course. Sadly, many of those pictured are no longer with us.

12 December 1962 T.4 Lightning XM993 was written off after her
undercarriage collapsed on landing at Middleton St George, Durham. It
overran the runway, overturned and caught fire. The crew escaped safely.
I was
there from April 1978 to April 1983. The crew provided fire cover for
the main station plus the two remote sites, TX and Rx Sites. In
addition there was a responsibility for fire protection at Hopton-on-Sea,
Weybourne, Trimingham (now permanent radar site) and a relay station at
Stoke Holy Cross. AFDFS OIC reported to a Flg Off responsible for
Fire. A crew of 2 was supported by the main building fire piquet of RAF
staff. The R-12 Engineering Fire Piquet would man the Land Rover with
Trailer Pump, especially when the AFDFS crew went offsite. The AFDFS
was: OIC - Sub Off R 'Mitch' Mitchell (week day and leave cover); L/Fmn
G Archer, R Best, R England, D Locke, BW Wymer; Fmn D Beecroft, P
Baldwin, P Eaves. The appliances we had were the mini Bedford and the
Land Rover/ Trailer pump combo; the photo shows then outside the fire
station next door to the R-30 Ops Bdg. The latter is now the RAF
Neatishead Radar Museum (https://www.radarmuseum.co.uk/index.htm);
there is some history on the website.
